7. Wolcen : Lords of Mayhem

Speaking of chaotic development, the very first game of the eponymous Nice-based studio Wolcen is a good example. Initially launched via a Kickstarter campaign and in Early Access under the name Umbra, this ambitious title went through many upsets, and several promises during development did not make their way into the final version.

If Wolcen still needs to be refined to be worthy of sitting next to the father of hack & slash, there is not much missing to make it a must-have title of the genre. Currently one of the most beautiful hack & slash ever conceived, Wolcen’s gameplay proves to be particularly interesting and deep, with elements that are its own. Overall a very solid game from the eponymous Nice-based studio, just short of excellence.

8. Warhammer 40,000 : Inquisitor – Martyr

If Grim Dawn and Torchlight stood out by focusing on a more futuristic atmosphere than the classics of the genre, Inquisitor Martyr goes even further by taking us into the generous universe of Warhammer 40,000. Developed by NeocoreGames, this title also had chaotic beginnings before stabilizing its trajectory in the Warp and offering us an excellent hack & slash adaptation.

Usually confined to a dark or heroic fantasy atmosphere, hack & slash turns with Inquisitor – Martyr to a dark future where there is only war. And it does it very well, thanks to a varied and dynamic gameplay involving the delicious bloodshed of the Emperor’s enemies. If you are a fan of hack & slash and Warhammer 40,000, this title from Neocore Games is a must try. Be careful not to get caught up in the Warp and a very addictive gameplay loop.

9. Last Epoch

In Early Access since April 30, 2019 and relatively unnoticed by the general public, Last Epoch nevertheless shows huge potential to place itself as a new reference of the genre upon its release. Developed by the independent studio Eleventh Hour Games, this title breathes the love of hack & slash and the will of mastered work.

Although still in Early Access, Last Epoch already gathers everything that can make it one of the best hack & slash of the last years. Graphically superb, with a complex and dynamic gameplay, as well as an endgame as strong as it is pleasant, this title from Eleventh Hour Games is definitely one to watch closely for any fan of the genre.

10. Lost Ark

Developed by Smilegate and finally freshly arrived on our shores, Lost Ark has certainly made a lot of waves in the hack & slash sphere. It is indeed one of the few titles of the genre to fully embrace the influence of the MMORPG, with raids and dungeons with many players unleashing powers each more explosive than the other, all in a free-to-play format.

In terms of classes, Lost Ark offers five archetypes well known to the genre, but each with numerous specializations corresponding to the play style of each one, in an extremely nervous and dynamic gameplay. Lost Ark also has an absolutely sumptuous plastic (and not only for the female characters) with superb scenery and visual effects at all levels that will literally burn your retina.

This is the end of our selection of the hack & slash games that have made a particular impression on us, thanks to their atmosphere, their mechanics, and the many hours of play and pleasure they gave us.

Remember that this is only a subjective list among a myriad of heirs that Diablo II has created in 21 years. Don’t hesitate to share with us your favorites and anecdotes about a particular title of an iconic genre of the videogame landscape.

Because if hack & slash is legendary, it’s above all thanks to its passionate players who have spent many hours of their gamer’s life cherishing and optimizing their character, in search of the ultimate loot… always the ultimate loot.
